Hanging wall paper is not as hard as you think. I started hanging wallpaper with the cheap and simple woodchip at 2.99 a roll. However, when you are asked by someone to hang wallpaper at 150.00 per role you better make sure you get it right fist time! The tools you will require for wallpapering are as follows. You will need a pasting table, bucket, brush and a paper hangars brush, tape measure, plumb line, pencil, wallpaper scissors, small scissors, sponge and a seam roller.

There are many ways to hang wallpaper but as with all home improvement jobs, preparation is the key. First of all apply a diluted solution to the wall which stops the walls from absorbing paste from the wall paper. Then you have to measure the wall with a tape measure. You will need some ladders and if there is a friend available it would be a good idea to have some help at this stage. Allow 1/2 an inch either end for scaling down.

Unroll the paper on to your pasting table and measure the length and mark with a pencil and a straight edge such as a ruler. Then cut along the line with the scissors and then repeat the process by turning the paper over and measuring it against a new length of paper. Keep repeating this until you have plenty of strips of paper to cover a wall. If you are papering an old house with uneven walls it is a good idea to apply the first strip of paper to the wall and measure from there to take into account any bumps.

Pasting the wallpaper is fairly straightforward. The important thing to remember is to paste out from the middle and then check the paper is evenly covered especially along the edges. Wallpaper pasting is fun and this is the favourite bit. I suppose it has something to do with the feel of the paste. Do the left hand edge first and then repeat with the right. Once finished fold the paper over so that both ends meet and leave to settle for as long as the manufacturer advises. This depends on the thickness of the paper. With woodchip because it is so thin you have to apply the paper to the wall straight away but with thicker papers it can take up to 15 minutes.

That is all that is required for the preparation for wallpaper hanging. The next part of the process is to actually hang the wallpaper on to a wall. This will be covered later but remember to always start hanging the paper on a wall next to a window and then work away from the light source so that any slight overlaps will not cast any shadows highlighting the joins. Good Luck with your hanging!
